Took my first long ride with the new O/B today. I am impressed and think I made a good choice. At 4K rpm's I was making 24.5kts and at 4500 rpms I was making 27.5kts plenty fast for this area when most days 20kts is too much.

Sounds powerfull. My twin 4 stroke suzuki's run about a knot and a half faster at both rpm's. If you cut a tight corner at 4k rpm's the motor should blow out just a little, if not, you might want to go up a hole. Are you running a 15x17 or a 14 1/4x19? (Those are the two props I ran when I had a single 225.) How much more $$ was the 250?

GLAD YOU GOT YOUR 225 I THINK THAT IS THE PERFECT SIZE MOTOR FOR THE 23’S HAS MORE THAN ENOUGH POWER AND STILL ECONOMICAL. I RUN A 15 ¼ X 17 ON MY YAMAHA 225 AND I LIKE IT A LOT. FELLOW-SHIP |

Briguy-
What do you mean by blow out a little? Not sure what you are looking for...if you mean cavitate, I haven't tried that manuever yet...but I will. my old five blade would not cavitate ever, unless trimmed way up. Of course it rarely cavitated also because it rarely was running....story already told. I am honestly not sure what size prop I am running, I am embarrassed to say. I think a 21" does that sound right??? -Hooper |

No...way too much pitch. 17 is about right but maybe a 19. What he means is that his boat likes to have the engine mounted high. Cavitation plate is above the transom, not level. This allows less drag and higher speed, less draft. I would bring them up a notch until you start to diminish it's handling in turns, then drop it one notch. I currently have my Zuki 4 inches above the transom and she runs like it is stock. 5" setback jackplate. You may want to get a plate, best couple hundred you can spend.

Nick,
I think the dealer did that when he installed it for me because they sais they had to raise it a notch maybe two. Best I can tell they did that. They were very thorough when they installed the O/B. In fact they completely reworked my wiring and it looks like a million bucks now. They earned my trust. -Hooper |

Hooper - what kind of RPM's are you getting at W.O.T. trimmed up? I also think 21 is too much prop if that's what you have, and agree that 17 is right for a 225 on a 23'.You don't want to start off with your new engine overpropped.Good luck with that motor, that's what I want when my old Rude dies.

Billybob,
Actually I asked as everyone seemed to think 21" was too big. It's a 19" by 14.5" stainless. With that I am getting 56-5700 rpms at WOT. So far so good with the engine. I have 20 hours on it now. Yesterday I was out fishing and I found at between 3000rpms and 3500 the engine shook and bogged down on itself. The the check engine light came on...I brought it in and they hooked it up to the computer (neat stuff). The engine told the tech what was wrong with it. Some part was falling out of synch and needed a bracket which according to the tech, should have been on the engine to begin with. That did the trick. And the fuel economy! Really nice! Hooper,
What would one expect to pay for a new 2003 225 HP FICHT? I assume you bought it locally around the Cape, just trying to get some numbers. Thanks, Rich

Rich-
I went to Ship Shops in So. Yarmouth (ask for Marty) and paid $12,100 for the engine alone. This was before the prop, installation, controls, gagues, and some re-wire work they did for me. When all was said and done it was $14,500. The engine is great. Fuel use is great. And I keep hearing more and more good things about this engine so I am hoping it was a good move. I am looking forward to 2004 already! If you want to chat about it, my email is ggibbons@attbi.com and I will reply iwth my phone number to give you more details. -Hooper |
