Default OEM Steering for '73 20' CC?

Hello Boys,

I blew up my steering system last night coming into the dock. I crawled under the CC and found a bunch of grey grease had dripped all over the place. It feels like the gears are stripped but I know zero about these things. I searched the archives here but can't find anything on OEM manufaturers on the '73 20' CC. Can anybody help me out with this? I am looking at the Teleflex 4.2 but hoping maybe I don't have to replace the whole system. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Scot

The problem with the cable steering is that you have to replace the system every couple of years if your lucky. If the boat sits for a while it destroys this type of steering. If you go the hydraulic route you will never go back. I have a 20 footer with a 225 and can steer it with 1 finger. If cost is an issue, down here in south florida you can pick up a used helm, resevoir, and piston ram. for about 300.00. Hope this helps.....been there and done that.

essox,
If your steering is OEM you are probably going to have to replace it. If the Steering Binnacle is an angled black metal housing like mine was it is a Keikaffer(please excuse the spelling) system and they don't make cables for them anymore. It was a good system in its day but its day is over. If its teleflex its probably newer.
