I just replaced my steering box and found the original serial no. decal and ratings placard. It says my boat is rated for a max of 240 hp.
I thought the '71 - '74 o/b 20' Seafari's were all rated for 140 hp, not 240. My neighbor's '76 20' SF is rated for 175, and I know of a '75 Seafari 20' that was replacarded in late 1983 with a modern yellow sticker that said max hp was 235. (That was after the factory had rebuilt the transom to 25" after it was hit from behind while on a trailer). Is this a simple case of errata in the orginal stamping of the serial no. sticker? I currently have a '92 Merc 200 with a 20" shaft, with 400+ hours, and, as I can get a NOS left over '03 Merc 225 hp 4S 30" model for under $7k from a local boat mfg., I will be raising the transom to 30" after this summer.
