repairs/modifications

I have a 78 SC18 and fear I need to replace the fuel tank (30 gal.)
1. where do I find a new fuel tank. Bluffton SC (near Savannah)
2. Is this a reasonable DYI project
3. Expected costs

Suggestions please.

Hi Jim and welcome to CSC

There is several threads here on Classic SeaCraft which include photographs that should answer must of your fuel tank replacement questions. Use the search function and enjoy the reading [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

BTW: I have a 78 SeaCraft and I replaced mine in 1995. You can pretty much plan on replacing the fuel tank floor as well and also the vent and fill lines while your in there. If I remember correctly, my tank came out within an hour [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

Thanks for reply Capt. Any estimates on cost and where I can locate a new tank. Also I see I need to learn how to use the post format better.

Sorry, No costs estimates for you as I have a 23' and installed 136 gal. Aslo it was 10 years ago. I think "Mark" could help you as he did a 18' just a couple years back. Others here have done it recently [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

when it comes to fuel tanks this is what i do: pull tank send it to patriot marine in ware town nj danny builds me an exact duplicate than i epoxy coat it replace all fuel system hosing at the same time also check the bond/ground system of both the tank an dthe fuel fill reair/replace wiring if needed as a general guide line aluminum fuel tanks are good for between 8-10 years after that you may be asking for trouble-avoid the tanks that are not made by a tank mfgr the fuel tank must have a build certificate on it stating who built it what it is made from thickness and pressure test info with out that sticker DO NOT INSTALL!!!

SC18 78...I think the fuel tank may be a bit beyond the 8-10 yr window, I've had it since new and this will be its first replacement...I want one of THOSE tanks... As NJ is quite a hike from Bluffton..anyone have an idea where I may locate one closer... Thanks for the help guys.. JS

Do you have anybody that does marine fabrication work in your area? Sometimes they build fuel tanks.
