Default 4 stroke weight on 1998 21?

seacraft's newly updated web site states a maximum outboard weight of 550 lbs. for the 21. was thinking of repowering my 21, but all 4 strokes in the 200 and 225 hp range are heavier than 550. Has anyone done it? is the powerhead of the yamaha too wide to fit the transom notch. I called tracker hq and they don't seem to know too much about most things related to seacrafts.

I think that anything over 550# whether you choose a 2 cycle or a 4 banger coupled with a couple of fat azz fisherman on the back is just two much weight for the 20'-21' to run properly

Yep, from what I hear and read, that seems to be the consensus these days

I think I may have to pass along the chain. That should probably be standard on the newer boats.

Go on the "new and improved" Seacraft site, they may have more info on this, just repowered my 1998 21' with a 200 hp e-tec, should get the boat this week and WILL splash it on Saturday, will let you know how it does.

Do you have a 25” shaft on your current motor? And what year is your boat? These two questions could make a difference.

The 1998 21' has a 25" transom, rated for up to 225 hp

i'll be interested in your thoughts on the e-tec. they are lower pressure direct injection than the HPDI's? seems like they might be more durable. wish they weren't white...

Sorry I must have went brain dead about the year of your boat. The 1998 were using the lighter composite materials in their boat and that in itself would lighten the boats especially in the transom. I have fished on 21’ notched transom boats with 225 25” shaft on the back you will get some water over the transom drifting fishing in the open sea and backing up in the open sea is a definite no no. If you drift fish I would buy a sea anchor to better position your boat to help prevent water coming in over the stern. My guess the scuppers should be ok as long as you don’t have everyone in the port or starboard transom side all at once.
