OK, I have a 79 23 which had twin 235 Evinrudes when I bought it. I have a single 225 Merc going on and I'm reworking the transom a bit on it.
Anyway, the steering is the Morse Controls hydraulic steering and had twin side mount cylinders with a tie bar between the two. Due to dwindling boat funds I am hoping to keep this system and adapt it to the single Merc but I'm having a beyotch of a time finding info about this steering system. The helm is part# D303600 -001F and the cylinders are 3500J models. All morse, does not look like the described Hynautics a lot of you have (had), and I think I would have seen the resevoir from that system. Anyone have this system? A place to send for reseal, repairs, or parts? There is some fluid leak in the system and will likely need to be resealed.. I just don't have the coin budgeted to drop $800 on a new Seastar setup, maybe next year... Thanks...

You will be Waaaay ahead to bite the bullet and but a new Telflex hyd steering system. $800 will buy it. Don't fuctus around trying to addapt carp. Doing so will cost you more money and heart ache in the long run.
Check with Surplus Unlimited in Daytona. I had 4 quotes out and they came thru on top, even through I had to pay Fl sales tax. |

Hi John-
Did you check any places like surplus unlimited or ebay? Someone's got to have a new hydraulic steering system that they want to unload cheap. If that does not work, talk to Bob Carpenter over on classicmako.com....I think he successfully resurrected (spelling?) an older hydraulic system for his restored 1973 23 Mako. |

Bob wanted to, but I talked him out of it. He bought a complete new SeaStar setup from Surplus Unlimited.
He's happy he did now. |

I have a complete, new hydraulic SeaStar system (boxes unopened) that I bought on ebay (intended for my SC 23) but did not end up needing.
It is a Teleflex SeaStar 1.7 Hydraulic Steering Kit. West Marine has them for $875, and I paid less than $700. I believe it is designed for non-power assisted outboard engines up to 300 HP. It includes the front mounted helm p/n HH5271, cylinder p/n HC 5345, oil, oil bleeder kit, and instructions. I bought the hoses separately from West Marine. I can probably return those if I can find the receipt, but I could also include them as a package to somebody, if anybody is interested? |
