Hi Capts,
I have gotten feedback from other posts, but Ill throw the question out again. 20ft Seafari. When I re-power I have decided to go in the 130-140 range. Ive heard everything about the etecs, and I doubt that I want to spend a fortune. Many have suggested the Suzuki 140s as a great engine. Are the 2 stroke zukes reliable? 4 strokes seem to dominate in reliability and effeciency. Several have suggested the V4 Yamahas. Again- 4stroke/2stroke. Reliability is my big concern along with fuel efficiency. A few Seafari owners even have 115s. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Probably want to keep the weight under 450. |

I know someone who has had great success with twin 140 Tohatsu's (2-stroke) if you want to add that to the mix. I doubt you could find a more reliable engine than Tohatsu - granted, it doesn't have the sex appeal of some other brands of power but the Japanese commercial crowd has been using them for decades.

My Seafari had a 135 merc and that was plenty. Not sure about the weight of it compared to the 4 stroke 140's.

Its nice to have the extra ponies when you need them. The extra comes in handy when getting out of weather |

The 140 2 stroke Suzy's are good engines. They have a weak spot, however. Never, never run anything but the very best oil in them. Absolutely no K-mart / Walmart oil.
That's good advice for any 2 stroke engine, however. By the way, I love, not like, love the reliability of Tohatsu/Nissan engines. It's hard to find a used one, however, and I can't afford a new one. As far as oil goes, Suzuki oil and Mercury oil both are the same formulation, and they both are (or at least used to be) made by Texaco/Chevron in the US. Yamaha 2 stroke oil is made by several companies, but mostly by Esso, and, I think, by Mobil. Evinrude/Johnson oil was made by Ashland oil in the 80's, I don't know who Bombardier get it from now. Stick w/ the good stuff.

Mine is a 225 2 stroke, not a 4.And yes it is great.I bought the motor for a charterboat I have at a great price and can't find anything negative about it.It fire's up everytime you hit the key, burns 8gph @ 4200rpm's which is pushing a 25x9.5 center console @ 25 kts.She will turn 5600 rpm's and that's 40 kts.I don't think they make the engine anymore though.I have heard good things about the 4 strokes, lots of guides down here run them.
