Default Steering systems

I’d like some opinions and comments regarding a new steering system that I will need to install on a 1976 SeaCraft 20’Sf that I bought last month. Right now, the SeaCraft doesn’t have a motor, helm or controls. I’ll probably power it with a 130 to a 150HP motor I realize the hull is rated at 175 max (?).

Is there any advantage in going to hydraulic systems on this size hull with that amount of power? If so, is the SeaStar system worth the extra $ (vs. the BayStar system)?

There seem to be several Teleflex cable systems (rotary vs. rack, NFB, etc.) Any consensus as to what works best on this size rig?

I've had NFB once (on my SeaCraft 18) and Seastar twice (on the 18' and 20') and greatly prefer the Seastar.

Go with the full fledged(sp?) SeaStar system the baystar system is not really front mount so it sends the piston off to one side of the engine and having used both the baystar is noticibly less powerful.

I would go with the hydraulic steering system. I had a 18’ boat with 140 hp on the back for about 18 years. When I sold it was on my third motor and I had to replace the Teleflex cables 4 times due to braking. With cable steering you have to man handle the wheel and if you let go of the wheel just for a moment your boat will start turning.

Oh, I want to get hydraulic steering for mine but it's really just a matter of $ for me.Hydraulic is so effortless and smooth.
But I do have NFB now on a 23 with a 225 and it takes a little muscle especially high speed tight turns, but it tracks straight as can be I can take my hands off the wheel and it just goes straight.

While Seastar is the pretty much standard now a day's, there is a new kid on the block. Uflex and I've heard some good report's about them. Easy install and easier on the pocketbook.

Thanks to all for the comments. Sounds like hydraulic is the favorite choice.
Are all of the hydraulic systems basically 4 turns lock to lock, and do they all have a variable top dead center setting?

Warthog5:

Where are you getting pricing on that new unit?

The lock to lock can vary. 1.7 vs 2.4 helm. Steering wheel center is alway's varied with hyd.

I haven't really priced them. Gary Shallbetter is the person that has been telling me about them and has installed them on several boat's. he has a Port Supply account.
