New Power!!
Just picked this up off craigslist for $250!! It's been sitting in a garage since the 80's . . . Compression was low in one cylinder. Tore it down, inspected the cylinder . . . everything looked good . . New gasket kit and lots of oil . . . the compression is back to 115 - 120psi in all 6. It's still got the original stickers on the switchboxes and starter from 1978 . . . It weighs in at 340lbs!!!

Re: New Power!!
Sweet! I've been looking for a deal on two of them for the seavette. I think the 175's are even lighter.

Re: New Power!!
I just sold a 1982 22' Grady with an 82 Mercury 150. It was a great running motor with great compression. I know some people don't like them, but I see a lot of those early 1980's Mercurys still around. Sounds like you got a great deal!

Re: New Power!!
Yankee - I'm running an old 1981 merc 225 on my seacraft now. It's an great old motor . . . These early mercs 2.4L are chrome bore . . . so they usually last a long long time. This one is going on the project boat . . . as soon as I get the thing finished.

Re: New Power!!
Good luck with the old merc i've had a couple of them with no lasting success just lots of dollars and heartache. Look over the harness real close they tend have a problem with dryrot in the wire insulation.

Re: New Power!!
Hawk - I went through the 225 . . . so I know exactly what your talking about.
before: After The trigger and stator wires are in good shape . . . the green coil wires and high speed spark advance spark module are rotted out (that's coming off). |

Re: New Power!!
My first merc was a 225 ran so good great power holeshot topend they are good motors I just think they are a little delicate, I seem to have better success with the omcs not quite the speed of the merc but they have been more reliable for me.
