Default Opinions on Yamaha F225

Am repowering a 1985 Sceptre and was going with a Yamaha F225 until the dealer offered the opinion that the 200 HPDI would give the same performance and efficiency for $2,000 less. Also said that older designs do not carry the 600 lb weight as well as newer boats that were designed with these heavier motors in mind (8'6" beam etc). HPDI is about 110 lbs lighter. Anyone out there with an F225 on a 23 that wishes they bought something different?

Thanks in advance.

I have heard good things about the 200 hpdi and 150 hpdi. 200 hp is the minimum and you will probably only see top speed of 36mph or so. Many here on this board feel that a new 250hp 4 stroke is the best choice offering plenty of power and efficiency. I just don't think 200hp is going to cut it. It is also a choice between 2 and 4 stroke. Resale value in a few years is going to be in the toilet for any 2 strokes. Get a quote on a 250 Suzuki and see how it compares. Keep in mind Yamaha has had major issues with its 250 and 300 hpdi's. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I agree, I don't think a 200hp is going to push a 23 fast enough. Other people will disagree...

Have you looked at the etec? Its more $$$ but weighs less and will perform like a 4-stroke in a lot respects.
