Default Transom question for Hermco and others

Good morning, a newbie to the forum here.

Well that's not true, been lurking for ages, it's a fantastic site you should all be proud of.

Please excuse me if it's been posted, I searched and read a ton of posts but didn't see this particular question asked.

Here's my question.

When you do a transom repair from the outside, cutting off the skin, in just about 100% of the cases no matter how many holes that puppy had in it from mulitple motor mounting to Lord Knows what, everyone seems to putty up the holes and replace the skin. My question is, why don't you lay on multiple layers of glass over top of the new core versus repairing all those holes in the old skin and glassing it back?

I've not done a transom yet ( about to) and I've never seen that addressed. Thanks in advance.

Bob

I do put new glass. I have only done one by using the old skin.

I'm sorry, I didn't know that. May I ask what type of lay up schedule you might use to bring it up flush with the outter edges?

Thanks again

I like to get at least (4) 1708s and two 1-1/2 oz. mats. Remember it's the glass not the core that gives it the strength.

HremCo,

I'm with clamsalot. I didn't realize you use a lot of new glass either.

Do you use just new glass (at least (4) 1708s and two 1-1/2 oz. mats) alone, or do you use it in combination with the old skin?

Starting at the new ply, working out, what's the thichness you are trying to get and what's the layup sequence, and does it change (total thickness and the sequence)if you are using just new glass vs incorporating the old glass skin into the layup?

Oh boy, I read that same thread about 4 times before asking about the skins and never caught on to the fact you weren't using the old skin. Pretty darned perceptive of me. (not)

Thanks again
