23 SF O/B weight specs

In looking at the specs on this site for a 23' CC w/ O/B dry weight is listed as 2650 lbs. Maximum total weight is stated to be 3185 lbs. I'm not clear what is meant by the latter, which is said to be the outboard capacity. This can not be gross tonnage since 100 gallons of fuel is 625 lbs, plus gear, plus passengers, plus engine(s), rigging, and miscellaneous would easily exceed the 535 lbs allowed by 3185 - 2650 = 535#.

So what does this number mean and what is the gross tonnage. I'm assuming there is also a number which expresses the maximum allowed weigh for the engines and how far they can extend past the transom. 535 might be close for that number, but it also lists 400 maximum hp, and certainly twin 200's in 1977 weighed more than 535#.

Please point me to the engineering limits on the 23CC as over the next year I will be making my decisions on a repower.

Let's not confuse "gross tonnage" with the weight of a small outboard powered cc....

Why don't you tell us what you are thinking of doing?

FYI, I had twin 150's hanging off of a traditional transom. It worked fine. The only issue was with all of that weight in the back (900 pounds plus) you always had to have the thru hull scuppers pluged up when you out on the water.

Now I have another 23' with twin 200's. They are on a flotation bracket and the boat sits just fine in the water.

I remember a while back seeing a 23' with twin 250's. It was a beautiful boat

I have twin Force 120's as purchased, and I haven't found specs but I'm guessing they weigh about 300 lbs each. I'm currently evaluating whether they are good for another season or whether I need to repower sooner. My guess is the two 120's equate to a 200HP single.

I have noticed in reading throughout the forum that a single 250 is a popular power choice for a 23CC. I do not wish at this point to go with a bracket mount and I have checked the transom and it is solid and in good condition. I will probably be looking at a late model single in the 200 - 250HP range and might consider 4-cycle if weight does not become an issue.

Because many in the market are repowering to 4-cycle, there seems to be a fair number of good 2-strokes on the market. My gut tells me a lighter 200 would be better than a heavier 250, but as Ross Perot said, I'm all ears.

So, at what point (weight-wise) does the boat attitude (planing problems) and waterline (scuppers below the waterline) become compromised?

I have seen several HPDI Yamaha 250 & 300 hp 2 strokes on ebay going for what seemed to me to be very little money. One '03 250 2S LH model with a 30" shaft and 520 hours went for only $5100. The matching RH needed a rebuild and went for $1800. They came off an older 34' Scarab.

Thanks for the pointers. I may have located a pair of Yamaha 130's at the right price, but I'm torn about whether or not to keep this as a twin or go to a bigger single. I'm leaning toward a single but the lack of torque steer in a counter-rotating pair is nice to have.

What is the collective opinion on 200HP for a 23? Under powered?

I run a Mercury 200 hp on my 23WA and definately not underpowered.

I re-powered with twin rebuilt Yami 130’s last season, it’s a nice set-up on a 23. I have a 34mph cruse @ 4000rpm burning about 13-14 gph, with a 42+mph WOT.

The motors weigh 720lbs for the pair (100 lbs more than a single 4-stroke 250). I have an ‘85 and have no problem with wet feet.
