Default Diesel Outboard??

While at an E-tec dealer today (friend of mine owns the dealership) I noticed they had a special forces Whaler in for service. I asked if it was OK for me to check out the boat.. He said "sure whatever you want."

It had twin E-tec Vindicators with "ROE" on the cowlings. I asked what ROE meant and the guy told me they would run on anything.. I had read about the smaller 30hp multi-fuel engines the special ops use to deploy from subs but this was interesting - a 200hp diesel powered outboard??
I just wonder how they perform on diesel (and for how long?). The whaler had the 50cal gun mounts (less guns) and was all decked out.. Unfortunately I could not talk him into a test run

Also kind of funny - a Brunswick marine (i.e. Mercury) Whaler boat with E-tecs?? Hmmmm?

Anyway after wasting about an hour on the internet trying to find info on these engines this is what I came up with -

web page

Enjoy...

MTT has designed and built the first turbine outboard motor of its kind. The MTT Turbine Outboard was demonstrated to the US Military in an effort to assist them in fulfilling their mandate, which states that all equipment onboard its ships must not burn gasoline by the year 2010. The outboard was used to power a landing craft carrying a CJ-7 Jeep, and performed with promising results.

I've seen the MTT's and the small Yanmar diesels but what impressed me was the E-tec 200hp V6??

I think they might be govt. contract only because I have looked for prices or other info and cannot find any..

Something tells me the gov't is able to "pursuade" Brunswick into selling them Whalers without the Merc pre-rig.

Fishjack, I contacted the ProLine boat factory and spoke to the comptroller (a parishioner of mine) and he says the MFE eTec engines are currently ('08) for government/law enforcement or non-profit service organizations sale only in the US, but are planned to be available to the GP in mid '09 for the 2010 model year. He also said the GP models of the MFE will only run JP8, #1 or #2 diesel, or gasoline.

When I asked what the cost of a 200hp MFE was right now for a 503c corporation service organization, he said they list at $23,000, and are available as full pre-rig only. Ya' gotta buy a boat from one of 6 specific manufacturers with the engine factory installed, and you must be a "search & rescue" type 503c non-profit organization, such as Coast Guard Aux, Civil Air Patrol, Search & Rescue of Central Florida, etc.

Although why a non-profit search & rescue would pay that much is beyond me, especially when Mercury will sell them new motors at factory cost.

Thanks for the update Fr. Frank.. That is what I figured.

Still curious to see some performance numbers on the 200hp running #2 diesel?? But right now diesel is more ($$$) than regular unleaded so I guess the point is mute..

Thanks again,
Jack

Not out here in CA. Diesel is less than 87 by 20 cents at the pumps.

I wonder what the compression ratio is on those motors?
