Transom bracket question?
I am getting ready to re-power my 1980 23'Center Console with a Suzuki 225 or 250 4-stroke with a transom bracket. Can someone tell me or point me to some resources to determine what length shaft to go with? Is there a advantage from the 25" to 30"? What brand of bracket is best? what size or dimension?

Re: Transom bracket question?
If you are not going to rebuild the transom during this time I would use the same length as what your old motor was or what the transom is now. Measure from the notch down to the bottom of the V. That is a 27 year old transom and it is really time to rebuild it. If you do rebuild it go with a 30” transom height.

Re: Transom bracket question?
Thank you FellowShip for the feedback!...I know this sounds crazy but the transom is in good shape. do you think it would have to be closed in. Reason I'm asking is that I want to use the boat temporarily for the summer.

Re: Transom bracket question?
In was in Key west recently and saw an older 23 with a bracket and twin 200 2 strokes. I spent about 20 minutes talking to the owner. No preparations were made to strengthen the transom prior to installing the bracket and motors. There were some significant stress cracks on both sides of the transom and the fella was in for some work to fix it.
If it were me I would re-do the entire transom or at least add some knees for support. Get a twin Seamark fiberglass bracket and a 30 inch Suzuki 250. You will get maximum flotation with the twin bracket and it comes with a transom closing system. Your boat should stay self bailing with that kind of set up. strick

Re: Transom bracket question?
I have a twin fiberglass bracket on my 23 sceptre that is built by Gause built boats in Tarpon Springs. They have both
twin and single brackets. My boat is at my house in Tampa if you would like to take a look at it.

Re: Transom bracket question?
No kidding....it must have a built in skeg since that'd be the only thing in the water.... He must do 60 or better on slight chop....

No you don’t have to fill in the transom. BUT for me and I’m probably talking for a lot of guys like Strick has said that transom is questionable. How do you know that it is in good shape? Did you have some one test it for water? Did you drill holes in it? Was it ever rebuilt? Just because it looks ok doesn’t mean it is ok. My transom Before re do at 25 years old.
