Terry - Navy top attaches to the top of the windshield, like the one in my avatar. Much better than a bimini for protection from rain and spray, but at the expense of visibility and ventilation! When original top wore out I replaced it with a bimini. Don't know where the name came from.

The Navy top comes from the civilian copying of the canopy on the old captain's gig, according to my neighbor, who is 84 years old, and a retired Navy Lt. Commander. I asked them what they called it in the Navy back in WWII, and he said they just called it the boat canopy.
