Etec 115 hp shaft extention question
Etec 115 HP:
The dealer shipped a 20" instead of the 25" and won't pay for the double shipping to return the engine and ship the one that I ordered. So, I have to install an extention. The 20" model uses a V4 lower unit instead of the V6 lower unit so I would have to use a 13 spline prop. I was expecting to use a Rebel 15 3/4 x 15 prop 15 spline prop on the 25" model. But will now have to add an extension and then use a smaller diameter prop. The 20" only supports a 14" prop and has a 2:1 lower unit instead of the 2.24:1. Anyone using an extension on an Etec 115? Will this be an issue? Will performance differ? Thanks! |

1st of all, if you ordered a 25", insist on a 25". If the dealer gives you difficulty, you can go to BRP customer relations and they will probably straighten things out. They're usually pretty good about that stuff.
2nd, there will be a performance difference, but it will be in your favor. The smaller gearcase has less drag. It is, however, also not as strong at the larger case. Every place you have a coupling is a potential location for trouble and power loss.

I have run Bay MFG extensions on two OMC, a 84 235 crossflow and a 94 150 OceanPro. I have had no issues on either motor. However, they are not cheap and at last time I checked they were 650.00 retail. I may have a used one available, but I would be stomping my feet on the dealers sales desk before I considered going with a extension.

Thanks all for your responses. The dealer is shipping a Bay Extension kit. When it comes I guess I will need to find an official "dealer" to install it to maintain the warranty from Bay. I spoke to BRP - they said it will not affect the warranty unless it is the cause of a problem, other than that they do not have any issues with it.
Kamikaze, thanks for the response, its good the hear the kits are reliable. I tried stomping but it doesn't work too well when you are 1/2 a large ocean away. Anyway, at least he is sending an extension kit. Briguy, I am not very familiar with the hulltruth.. I guess I'll need to set up an account on there. Thanks all - any more comments are welcome. |

If your at all handy and comfortable with dropping your lower unit, you can complete the installation yourself and send in the warranty card to Bay MFG yourself (comes in the box). BAY MFG is a small operation (the wife of the owner will answers the phone) and they are very easy to work with if you have any questions or need replacements parts. Installation of the extension on the two motors that I installed a required that you slightly ream out the midsection channel for the input shaft to allow the shaft extension to pass through and remove the shift rod to insert the required extension. The rest is pretty straight forward. Kamikaze |

I have no problems dropping the lower unit and changing water pumps etc.. What do you use to ream out the midsection so that the shaft extension will fit through? It may become obvious when it arrives but I have never seen the extension kit so it is new to me. Thanks |

I remember correctly it's a 1 1/8 inch hole that you'll need to mount on a 16" extension ( I used 7/16" thread rod for the one I made). You'll only need to remove about 1/8" of material from the midsection casing to allow the Bay MFG 5" input shaft extension to pass through to the power head. The opening of the midsection shaft tunnel is large enough near the lower unit for the extension to fit, but the tunnel constricts near the power head, thus the need to enlarge it to allow the extension shaft to reach the power head. ETEC's maybe different than the older models I've installed the extension on, so I'd recommend you verify with Bay MFG to make sure what is required. I see you live in Hawaii.
