1990 200hp Johnson on a 20' CC
I just mounted my motor and console in my 1983 20' CC and I think it's fine but guys around town are telling me otherwise......The 1990 Johnson 200hp VRO is around 480lbs right? The same block as a 175? SO even though it might be over the hp limit would you guys have any qualms that it's too heavy? Now all of a sudden I'm scared it's gonna crack the transom on the 200 mile trip to NJ for father's day. Anyone have a similar setup??
Thanks, Dave |

Re: 1990 200hp Johnson on a 20' CC
I have a 1979 20 Master Angler. In 1999, I had my transom redone and hung a 1999 Johnson 175 carbed, and oil injection disconnected. Though she does not leave the garage very often, 13? hours total, the only fault that I see is a cosmetic crack at the top of the transom. I believe that this is from the semi-professional job that I paid for, and not a result of too much weight.
She handles nicely and screams at 5800 revs. when I occassionally blow her out. Not sure if I'm breaking 50 or not with a light load, but I'm very sure that a 200 would do it on mine. I would not worry at all. Rig it and ride it. Can't remember which OMC stainless steel prop I have but it's downstairs if you need that info. If she were used normally I'd upgade to the Bennet trim tabs. Other than that... Hope this helps ease your mind for Jersey. Where are you going? Michael. |

Re: 1990 200hp Johnson on a 20' CC
BTW, the 99 OMC replaced a "rigged and ready to blow" mid-80's Merc. Black Max 200. There you go. Feet did get a little wet with the original floor scuppers.

Are you sure its the same block as the 175? I had a 1989 175 on the stern of mine and it was fine. I'm pretty sure my engine was 420 lbs.

Re: 1990 200hp Johnson on a 20' CC
IB, that's funny. I was spent summers at the mouth of the Tom's, south side, Ocean Gate. Three dollars a day was our allowance for 6 gallons of gas and a quart of oil for the 13 Whaler moored to a half keg. We cut grass for solid money, clammed and crabbed for spending money, and snuck through Old Barney for kicks and giggles. Thank God I never had kids. Hope you enjoy your Fathers Day! Part II.

Iceboy, I'm floating a 225 EFI merc on my 73 20' that weighs 490# and it is fine. Also i have trailered mine from Jersey to south florida three times without cracking. And its the original transom. Hope this helps.

Re: 1990 200hp Johnson on a 20' CC
Keep the motor trimmed down as low as possible, that will help with leverage on the transom
