Default Shoot Through Transducer

Hello again all!

I have a 23’ seacraft. The transducer is mounted on my transom between twin 150 merc efis. The transducer occasionally loses bottom while trolling, and does not read the bottom at any more than about 6kts. I am considering getting a new transducer that shoots through the hull. How difficult will the installation be on a shoot through transducer on the 23 Seacraft? Hull is a 1998. Not a classic, I know. Thanks for any help of guidance.

I have a shoot thru on my backup unit on my classic 23. I cleaned the area next to the center line really well about 2 ft forward of the tansom, applied a big glob of silicon, and smooshed the tansducer down evenly into it. In calm water I can read bottom at 30mph. This should work on any boat as long as it does not have a composite hull that has the core sandwhiched between the layers of fiberglass.

Ryan,

Will this work with a regular transom mounted transducer. I have a lowrance fishfinder and it has the transom mounted transducer. Could I apply silicon to the bottom of this and it would work?????? also is the silicon white or clear (does it make a difference)???
So mount it next to the middle stringer???
I just drilled 4 holes for my transom mount ducer -thanks, Fred

fred, my ducer is a transom mount that just sits in the bilge. no silicone it just sits up against the center stringer.
plus side is no holes in the transom.
minus side is it does not read very clearly past 300'. i will pick up depth all the way out to 1000', but not a with a clear picture of bottom, however the picture is perfect (great bottom definition) all the way out to 200'+ so for the reefs in 60-100' it works great. sounds like it would work for your application if its not too late

I have a Lowrance in my 23. I have what they call a "hockey puck" transducer. It's located a few inches port of the center line, about 2 ft. forward of the transom. An electronics shop recommended not to put it on the keel as that is the thickest part of the hull. I bedded the ducer in a splooge of 4200. It holds bottom at all speeds.

How many watts or Kilowatts is the hockey puck?

I have Raymarine with the hockey puck and it is a duel frequency. My understanding is air is the enemy, so any silicone will work. Mine is set up in a piece of 6inch PVC filled with non-toxic antifreeze. That way the Transducer is perp to the bottom.
