How to fix???
The lid of my boat needs some work specifically in the area under the rub rail all along the boat. After 40 years of people screwing and unscrewing it is pretty beat. I am thinking that a layer of glass all along this area. would you wrap it over the top or just lay a strip 1.5"-2" wide all the way around? Hopefully a picture will work for me.

Re: How to fix???
I would just put a strip all the way around and fair it in. Depending on the width of the rub rail would determine how much and where you would need to blend it in. You may want to put at least a couple layers on it though.

Re: How to fix???
You can build a rail all the way around using mahagony or similiar woods...got to be handy with a saw though.
adds a nice look as well, consider it customized. |

Re: How to fix???
Thats pretty sweet right there. Never really thought about making the rub rail as one with the boat.

Re: How to fix???
Should I be using 3/4 oz mat for these type of repairs?

Re: How to fix???
Those are sweet looking rub rails. Too bad I don't have the patience when it comes to woodworking.

Re: How to fix???
Actually, it's not a difficult as you would think. After you cut the profile that you're looking for, the hardest part would be making numerous small cuts on the underside of the rail that connects to the boat so you can make it bend enough for the curve of the bow. Also, the bow area is not one piece but a few smaller pieces, finally this is just the "base" for the rub rail...when i completed the rebuild, I actually went with a Rubber rub rail over the mahagony.

Or steam bend it---preferred way in most cases.
