Default Transom core question

After fixing my wtf moment on my transom core things are starting to go a bit more smoothly for me. The question I have is should the transom core fit tight to the hullsides and bottom or should i trim it back 1/2" to 3/4 and set it in a bed of thickened resin?

does not have to be tight . In fact, its better if there is small gap. If your using epoxy the gaps can be bigger with no problem (no cracking of the putty).
