25" Transom Actual Height

Getting ready to do the transom on my 1974 20' as early as this week if I can get that far, will see! Google isn't very user friendly for numbers so anyone have an actual measurement of transom height for a 25" shaft outboard. I know it is at least 26" or might be closer to 27". Maybe to get the vent plate a bit above bottom I should go 27" anyhow? Going with a Suzuki DF140 if anyone has one they wouldn't mind measuring!

There are holes on the mounting bracket that allow you to raise or lower the engine as needed. A 25 inch transom is a 25 inch transom....not 26" or 27"

Question: what if you made your transom 27" and then mounted your motor as low as it would go. Your anti cavitation plate is now 2 inches above the lowest point on your transom. So you go and run the boat and and find that you need to lower the engine. How are you going to do that?

So to answer your question I would make it 25 inches.

Hi Strick,

Actually my current 20" transom measures 20.5ish and my current 20" classic Glasspar as the factory made it measures 21". I think it is partially due to the geometry of the transom angle. So if you measure straight down rather than down the face it would be 25". Thought my old Parker with 25" was more than 26" but the memory fails.

My last boat had an enclosed transom with a Gil bracket, probably why I'm trying to get every fraction of an inch I can.

It's measured perpendicular with the earth during a lunar eclipse

I know, there are a couple of "trade off" reasons I'm not going there on this one, budget being at the top of the list.

quick question for strick,,, im adding a bracket 27 inch set back,, so i should mount it 27.5 inches high from engine mouning point from striaght line back of bottom of boat correct?

hugo -- I picked up a used stainless marine bracket for my 23' been a while but from what I remeber with a 30" set back they recommend raising the motor 5" above the bottom of the boat. this takes into account the water rising off the bottom. hope this helps you can call them they were very easy to work with
