Kind of a silly question, but is there a definitive measurement for mounting a back rest to a horizontal bench ?
I'm mounting a removable backrest onto my i/o engine cover and am not sure how far I should mount it to accommodate for all sizes and shapes ( adults, kids, tall, short ) - taking into account how legs should feel at the bend in the knee etc... Anyone have a knack for this thing - or is there a standard ? I have all the room I need, just don't want to make it too shallow or too deep. Thanks |

The industry standard for depth of a seat is 18" The angle of the back is a variable and is best arrived at through experimentation. Not one best solution for everyone.

I'd love to see pix of what you fabricate. I've often thought of doing the same thing.

I was going to fabricate one but then I found EXACTLY ! what I was looking for, made by Birdsall Marine in Fl. A little pricey for what it actually is - but when I tried to have it made here, it was within $50 of Birdsall - so I guess it's worth it.

It might be a project for next Spring. Wife and young kids are fair-weathered boaters and now Im rigging up for bass fishing - so no immediate need for a seat.
Next Spring, I will have it done. It will be perfect for an i/o engine cover. And, removable so I can maintain the clean fishing space I need (my portable livewell goes on the i/o cover). I'm usually atrocious at posting pix, but I'll try to remember. I still owe a pix of a BEAUTIFUL, custom re-make of the famous ( or infamous ) foldable, SC companionway ladder. This one is solidly made out of wood. And it's light. Someone made it for me and it is absolutely the best design I have ever seen. I could not have thought it up and could not have made it as nicely as was done. |

I would love to see the ladder. Especially if it's something that could be copied.
