Default transom dilemma

My 1973 20 cc is looking like its finally in need of a new transom. Here's the problem, the outboard is in good condition but its a 20". Do I redo the transom at 20", doesn't seem all that logical. Raise the transom to 25" and extend drive shaft in the engine. Sell the engine, close the transom and get a bracket, that sounds very expensive. Or listen to the some people with common sense and sell the whole thing and look for one that is already done, again sounds expensive. And just can't fathom selling my boat. Also just how difficult is it to redo a transom? Cut outer layer out and work it that way? any thoughts would be great, thanks
