Boat weight / trailer tires advice
Anybody out there have an idea of the weight of a 1976 MA 20 with no tower and a 97 2 stroke Mercury 115HP motor approx 45 gal tank which is typically always full.
I need 4 new tires on tandem trailer and don't just want to replace with what's on it without doing the math - current tires are 175x80x13 Cross Ply 1360lb rating. I also need to decide on cross ply vs radial for the replacement. I have 2 typical trips - Local...average once a week with a 30 mile round trip Long Distance...100 mile one way trip once a month Right now I think I'm at about $65 a tire for same as what's on current trailer in radial or cross ply whichever I want. Any input there truly appreciated ! |

Here ya go, for the extra money I'd go with the 1660# capacity tires. No radials for me, had a set of four one time...never again.

My 23 Contender is much heavier and has a 250 2 stroke.
I have 205/75/14 trailer tires and just replaced them with the kenda load star's, 2 trips so far and the tires are holding up.

So with 20% rule for Tandem that would put max weight at 5533lb - does that sound right ? I doubt a 20MA + Motor + Trailer + gas no matter how much glass is in the hull or junk is in the storage areas will ever exceed that ? What was the bad experience with radials ? |

I sent you this link 'cause it's close to where you live and they are good folks. In any case I think you would be in very good shape capacity wise.
I had a trailer built for my 23'er and it came with Carlisle radials.....they bounced like crazy, even tried to have them balanced. Three of them took 7 to 8 ounces of lead to get them even a little close. One only like 3 ounces. The guy who tried to high speed balance them said it was the most weight he had ever put on. Just bad square tires. Now have bias ply. |

don't do radials for some reason? - call Mike over at American Marine in tarpon he can get straight tires or with rims, if he calls before 11am its there the same day. In this case bigger is better - DonV is so smart

I have 13's under my 20' MA on a dual axle trailer. I have towed it ~100 miles on one axle in November in New England. (Broken spring when I bought it) Tire temp wasn't an issue, but load was probably 1000 lb over what was rated. When it is 95F up here and I tow ~130 miles, the tires get warm, but no problems. (Now I use all four!)Of course the asphalt is like 130F or more in July.
Everything else equal, radials should run cooler. I *think* I have Kenda LoadStar K550 tires- they are radials. Looking online, they are 1360lb rated. http://www.kendatire.com/en/specialt...loadstar-k550/ |

I bought a set of 4 pep boy 29.00 13inch tires in 2004. drove cross twice . . . they are still on the same trailer.
