Default Relocate batteries back to original location

After a few years of having my batteries located under hatches in the splash well, I have decided to open up their original place to use once again.

I am also in the process of a helm changeout. I found a Seastar 2.0 to replace my 1.7 helm. I was getting a bunch of noise in the helm and reduced steerage. I will be changing it out today. Any advise on the change out?

I wish I could do the same on my Seafari. It's a real pain getting the batteries in and out (either side of the motor, against the transom). I don't like having the extra weight so far back, in addition to the access issues.

Do I remember correctly that Moesly originally had a single long/thin battery resting just in front of the I/O motor? Any thoughts?

That would be a good spot for 'em. Would be worth making some measurements up there. I remember the old straight 8 Buick's having a long thin battery, but they would be 6V. A couple of those batteries in series would work; might be able to find 'em from an antique car source!

6V, so you'd need two in series? Pretty narrow and light, so they'd probably fit up in front of the engine and be easy to handle. Many of the trawler guys use 6V golf cart batteries in series for their house battery banks because the big 8D 12V conventional deep cycle batteries are so heavy (~120 lbs!) and hard to handle! Appears to be conventional wet cell technology, so maybe not too expensive. I had a red top Optima AGM that lasted 7 years. Bought it because it only weighed 35 lbs, so didn't cause too bad of a list stbd when mounted out near the chine on the Seafari.

Yup...need 2 batteries. I'll still need a deep-cycle 12v, though.
I'll check the space between the engine and the end of the fuel tank. It's narrower than OEM (I think) because the replacement tank is a bit longer than OEM.
I honestly don't know if I can fit 2 batteries end-to-end.
