Just need a little direction and where to look for the problem (corrosion bad switch).
When using the tilt trim switch on the throttle handle, the unit will always make noise to lower the unit. However to raise the unit all I get is a click...the clicking is in the rear by the pump. Of course when I want to check it when someone is around it then works. So any ideas? Would you think it was in the throttle switch or in the back someplace ?

I have an outboard motor (Yamaha) that I am having some similar issues. The problem has been going on for some time. I did have a bad switch which was replaced and also replaced relay. The motor would tilt up, but wouldn't go back down at first. I was able to release the pressure with a screw driver when at the boat ramp, then it didn't give me any more problems the rest of the day.
The weird thing is that it changed and would go down, but not up after sitting in my yard for awhile. I noticed some fluid leakage later on and I had someone replace the seals and refill with fluid. Then the problem with the tilt went away and everything was fine, I thought. The tilt has started giving me problems again, not wanting to tilt up, unless I let it go all the way down first. Since I had no starting problems, I didn't think the battery would be something to look at. My volt gauge was reading about 12 volts. I decided to put a charger on the battery and the tilt works then. There still could be corrosion problems, or maybe a weak relay, but I think I will try a different battery and see what happens. |

Could be corrosion on the switch causes too much voltage drop through it or could be the relay back on the motor. If you can swap the wires on the switch and the symptom is the same then I would say the issue is on the motor end...after switching wires the motor goes up but now down doesn't work. Get the heavy duty alligator clipped wires from radio shack to use for that kind of connection swapping testing. They should be heavy enough to drive the relay.

Try tapping the motor with a small hammer. If it then works it probably is the brushes in the motor. Easy fix.

corrosion on the relay - internal no cleaners/etc will help, just flip the switch a few times,it breaks up the corrosion on the relay contacts your ship,it's "rack" stored, right ? side note: you've given me a "hard time" on occasion, but I still give you good useful advice...

Mr.T,
What lift motor do you have. Did you get this resolved? I hope so... How about NOLA R.R's Bowrider in St Augustine - ready to save another Moesly? Love to see some of that glowing cypress wrapping a Bowrider's seating and gunnels... Cheers, McGill
