Default Starter

My FICHT has developed an issue, I want to see what you guys think.

What its doing is when I go to start the motor you hear it spin like its not spinning the motor but its spinning. I try several times and eventually it spins the motor and starts the engine.

A John Deere tractor mechanic that goes to my church thinks I just need to put some lubricant on the bendex, but I cannot see how I can do that as it appears the starter is completely enclosed.

Lube the bendix or look for a bad ground or low battery voltage..

Thats it...

Battery is fully charged, could be a bad ground ..

So how do you access the bendex typically on an outboard motor, I know how to do it on a car but not sure what to do in this situation.

Thanks for the advice!

Negative on the starter removal....

Get your self a can of WD-40 Easy reach

Remove the fly wheel shroud cover and spray away...

Cycle the starter with the kill switch clip removed (if equipt) or spark plugs out..

Done deal...

The bendix is just sticking and cannot fully engage the flywheel...

Had to do my old 75 HP Johnson every couple of years.

No kidding Ken, I thought this process should have been placed on page one of the maintenance section of the owner's manual. Every one of the six old style OMC engines I have owned required steady lubrication maintenance on the bendix starter shaft. If you let it sit for a few months it was automatic the bendix would stick.

Default Starter Bendix

My last Merc 150 lasted 28 years. It sometimes needed a shot of WD-40 as well on the starter Bendix. For saltwater usage also sprayed the entire engine under the hood when brand new & once in a while with CRC soft seal.

Ok I got the Dry Lube and I am ready to go, but here is what mine looks like, I am unsure what I need to remove to access the shaft and benedix.

Any help is appreciated.

My understanding is these motors will not even spark, hence start, unless the starter is cranking the motor at a certain speed. ECM will say no sparky, no go. I got a free FICHT and changed out the starter, solenoid and the wire that goes between the two. The starter was around $80, and pretty sure that was the issue on mine, corrosion showing, 15 years old, etc. It would crank great but after changing the starter, it cranked a bit faster and started right up. Low battery or even a new battery without enough cranking amps would have the same effect.

So as an update, I decided instead of trying to remove the flywheel cover etc, I decided to undo three bolts that held the starter in place, lowered it enough to spray the dry lube and put it all back together and it worked perfectly.

So there ya go hope this helps someone else with a 115 FICHT who cant easily access the benedix.
