Default recommendations for repair in RI- Scuppers

I have a 73 20sf... I've been trying to repalce the brass scupper tubes that are still vertical through hull... it's not going well and am at tge point where I'd rather someone do it for me, corectly.

Would anyone recommend a business or person in Rhode Island that would be able to help me out?

Kevin,

Not sure where you sure with this or if your rig has original brass tubing. if it remains somewhat original, the process is fairly easy. I don't know of anyone in RI although the project is relatively simple and takes less than an hour once everything is in hand so don't let anyone dupe you. Any boatyard can handle this easily.

I used brass tubing from Moeller cause thats what my '72 had, and I couldn't find any thing else. Getting them out was much easier than I anticipated. I knocked in/off the flange with a screwdriver or chisel and used a 1" schedule 40 pvc pipe and hammer to tap it out.

Dry out the holes with some alcohol and ream the holes well to get the mush out. They are held in place by a glassed in 3" cube of wood and that may be deteriorating to some degree That is often the unsuspected leak point). You may even want to over drill and create an epoxy wall liner on that block before reinstalling. As far as the gap on flange angle against the hull, it should be nominal once its snug, and the 4200 or 5200 will fill the space as you compress the flange to the hull and deck. Moeller makes a tool to flare the brass tubing ($35 or so if you go with brass) Here are a couple of links to my feeble repair (not pretty but it doesn't leak). Good luck. There are many posts regarding this topic so do a search and see what's best for you. Good luck.

Thanks McGillicuddy... So far here I am: And I have read every post here and on web regarding this ... and Still don't have a definitive solution... I am 100% overthinking/over executing this.

1. I removed the existing tubes, they were shot, and def leaking into bilge. Removal was a breeze, however the port side, I removed it from bottom up and it cracked so gelcoat on the deck side of the scupper hole, not a HUGE deal but now I have to fix that in order the the tube to sit flush... in the picture below, the chunk is lower right...

2. Second issue faced, and this is where I am spinning in my head... So, I ordered 4in brass tubes and flaring tool, 3in were too short, so I have to Cut the tubes I'm assuming just shy of 1/4" past hole for flare tool. Again, I can handle the cutting of the tube, its how the tube sits at an angle, instead of square to Hull for the tool to squared the flare... see below.

3. from this last picture I removed the raised piece that sits in front of the hole to work properly, I had to sand and epoxy the area to make sure there will be a cleaned and ready area around hole to get everything nice-nice.

4 I have taken care of the interior of the hole, I have expoxy coated the interior of it, filled a small area of along the wall of it. The hole is smooth and solid.

Ive also included this photo taken from the hatch showing that in the interior of the through hull was glassed around it... Don't know if this is normal, but the guy who did this work, ( which I believe is documented on this site His name was Blue from Rhode island), this is how I found both supper interiors, No blocks of wood they go through.

Again, I've literally stared at this project, longer than I have put time working on it. I don't know if its a mental block or whatever, But its keeping the boat from being in the water. Between work and 2 Year old... Im at the point where I THINK i should just bring it to someone to do it... But I really want to do it myself but not to F@#K it up.

I hope this adds a little more insight to where I'm at.

Looks like those scuppers have been repaired once before, as a '73 should have the wood blocks Gillie mentioned. Looks to me like you've already done the hard work, as the glass surrounding the tubes appears to be in good shape. The fractured gel coat in the well in the deck is just cosmetic and could be easily repaired using thickened epoxy. The tubes I bought were already flared on one end, so I installed them with flared end on inside and cut them at an angle parallel to bottom so they extended roughly 1/8" below hull. I made my own flaring tool using a threaded rod and some 1/2" drive sockets that rolled the edge over about 45 degrees to start the flare on the bottom. The brass is pretty soft so I just used a ball peen hammer to peen the flared out edge flat against the hull.

You should keep the wedge in front of the scupper outlet . . . it creates a lot of suction when you're on plane and will drain water off the deck in a hurry.

Thanks Bushwacker... Seems like you two are on top of every scupper discussion on here.

I'll just try to and tackle this myself..I've just over thought the whole process envisioning it being more difficult than it will be.

I'll keep you posted. All I want to do is fish and these damn scuppers are keeping the boat in my yard.

If I have any issues I'll be sure to make it public on here.

Thanks again!
