Thanks for the info John. You know how the rumor mill goes, everything gets twisted around and it means just the opposite when it gets to ya.....
Suzuki does not have a great rep down here in Miami from what I have heard, again, all personal opinion and preference I guess... John

I've run a Suzuki DF140 on my 18 footer for almost a year (100+ hours, Florida and Virgin Islands), and the son of a gun has yet to hiccup ONCE. Runs like a scalded dog, sips fuel (just under 5 statute miles per gallon over a 70 mile day of mostly hard running last weekend), and quiet as a church mouse. No buying/messing with oil, no smoke, no stink.
Can't tell yet if it'll last for ten years, or if a dealer will be available when I need him (although my local Johnson guy says he's got everything I'd ever need), and don't know what resale will be if I ever decide to sell. It was WAY cheaper than the Yami 115 four stroke, and WAY, WAY cheaper than the Honda 130. So, yeah, I guess I'm a fan. "Everything I've ever wanted and more." I'm not saying it's the best motor in the world - maybe I just got lucky -but when I compare technical design, weight, performance, price, and my experience, I'd be hard pressed to go any other way. Good luck...ask people who own and run the motors you're thinking about, do some research on the net, and shop! Brian |

Thanks for all the input. I've heard the same thing about Johnson 4-strokes actually being Suzukis, and I believe Suzuki is making them for others as well. I feel pretty good about the quality and price of the Suzuki, but my concern is will 140 hp 4-stroke have enough low end power for my 20 cc. I'm not concerned about top end speed, but whether it will muscle through a raging inlet?
bamj, how's your hole shot? Yamaha HPPI's are heavy and expensive, I'm not sure if I get a warm and fuzzy feeling about Evinrude Ram/Ficht, and I don't do Mercs. Fuel efficency is important, even though I'm increasing my fuel tank from 50 to 60 gals, but I don't think I want to go with a carbed 2-stroke. Hey CaptLloyd,
I'm happy with the hole shot, using a s/s 14x20 wheel. When I ran an 18x20 the hole shot was outrageous/awesome, but WOT pulled too many revs (and top end suffered). Suggest you make sure trying several props is part of the deal you make when purchasing (no matter what brand/model engine you settle on). I think your choice depends on how you expect to usually use the boat...several people, a lot of gear and gas, or solo with a couple rods and half a tank? I had fun swapping out props, and was surprised at how significantly each changed the performance characteristics of the motor. I ran in and out of Palm Beach inlet several times when wind, waves and current were kicking up, and I felt I had plenty of juice to bob and weave as needed. Good luck! Brian |
