The operator of the boat hit the jetty at cruising speed, having missed the turn in the channel just 75 yards away from the jetty. The depth almost all the way across the inlet to the west jetty is 7-12'. The channel in the inlet is 12-30' deep. Once through the bridge or out of Destin Harbor, a 28' powerboat can just head straight for the flashing green light at the west side of the inlet mouth, with no fear of hitting a jetty or running ground.
The yellow line is the approximate course the ill-fated boat actually steered, while the white line is the safe course in the channel.
