Re: Best Engine for a 20ft CC
I am redoing a 1970 20' and will be using one of Potters brackets and a 225. It should do over 50 mph.

Re: Best Engine for a 20ft CC
well that is what I was thinking either a 200 mercury or a 150 yamaha four-stroke. Probably going to go with the four stroke just because of the ease of maintinance and the queitness.

Re: Best Engine for a 20ft CC
I have a '74 20CC. Just repowered to a Yam 200 EFI. Went from a OMC 150. The 200 makes the stern sit slightly lower - but it was already somewhat marginal. I could have got the 150 Yam HPDI for the same price as the 200 EFI and I opted for HP over fuel consumption. It is a 50+ mph boat with the 200, but I wish I would have put the 150 on instead (for better fuel consumption (2x) and less weight). (50+ can get a bit sketchy.)

Re: Best Engine for a 20ft CC
The ideal engine probably depends on what the owners primary objective is. If fishing is the main goal, a 135-150 is more than adequate. However, if the goal is to see the outer limits of how fast a 19'6" fishing boat will go, a bracket with positive floatation and twins would definitely make it go faster.
Go to any inland lake and watch the bass boys drive by with their glitter-painted boats with 250's on the tail and determine if that is how you want to get from point A to B , If so, more is better. |

Re: Best Engine for a 20ft CC
QUESTION FOR HERMCO ON THE 20 CC'S THAT i HAVE SEEN WITH A FLOTATION BRACKET THEY SEEM TO SIT REALLY LOW IN THE STERN. ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT THIS? OR ARE YOU DOING SOMETHING TO COUNTERACT THE BALANCE BY ADDING WEIGHT UP FRONT SOMEWHERE?

Re: Best Engine for a 20ft CC
ideal engine on 20' if not raising floor or adding floatation bracket? - the lightest one you can find.

Re: Best Engine for a 20ft CC
I just installed a Evinrude 175 DI on my 76 20cc. I was going to install a 150 DI. With a 4 blade 17" prop it is turning 5600RPM and is running 55 mph. I have found at 45 mph the boat starts to walk and at 50 it really shakey. If I had to guess a 150 DI should push the boat between 38 and 44 mph. I would not even think of putting on of these engines on a 20" transome. I raised mine during the overhall. As for the water problem I install the plugs when I step in the boat and pull them when I tie back up. By the way did everyone see the Evinrude won the JD Powers Award taking 1st place for there Evinrude DI 2 strokes beating all the other 2 stroke outboards.

Re: Best Engine for a 20ft CC
If I could choose raising the transom from 20" to 25" or raising the floor 2", it would be no contest. With the original floor, you're feet are going to get wet no matter what the transom height. With the raised floor, at least it will drain...
