Specific info needed on 20' Sceptre hull
Considering picking up an older hull for a resto and am looking for some input on a 20' Sceptre hull, hoping some owners can fill me in.
What is the freeboard/gunnel height on these boats in the stern corners and then closer up by the helm? Is repowering these hulls an issue considering the weight of a new 4-stroke in the 115hp-150hp range? Lastly, does anyone have firsthand knowledge of this hull and a late 80's early 90's Grady 19 dual console that can offer a comparison between the two? Last edited by tomfl; 08-09-2012 at 08:26 AM. |

I think it was your asking for the comparison to the grady that limited your chance of any answer.
The 20 Sceptre was a pretty rare bird so there may not be any 4 strokes on that boat . I have seen new 150 etecs on them, and i/o. You might want to PM Strick and see what he is putting on his bracket Sceptre.

I have a Sceptre 20' with a 2002 Yamaha F100 four stroke. The boat is currently on its mooring but as soon as I get down to it I can get the info for you.It does not ride stern heavy at all,any water that does get aboard goes foward on it.

Re-powering is a concern. Weight is the enemy of maximum performance. They only have a 7.5' beam and a sharp entry so buoyancy is not like some clumsier boats. The 20 is strong and nimble . Recent model re-powers I'd consider: DI 2 strokes 90 (330 Lbs)and 115-130 Etecs (375-390 lbs) 115 Optimax (375-390 lbs) 115 Tohatsu (375-390 lbs) 4 strokes 90 - 140 Suzuki (345 - 421 lbs) the 140 Zuke is the biggest I'd go only due to its power to weight advantage. Merc 115 lbs (400lbs) Yamaha F115(400 lbs) The lightest 150 hp 4 strokes are the new Mercs at 455lbs and that is simply 100 lbs to much. Second hand, the Sceptre will ride much better than the Grady 19 DC - no comparison...

That's a good list Gillie. If one was going to consider the 140 Zuke at 421 lbs, you might want to also consider the 150-175-200 E-Tec, as they're only about another 10 lbs heavier. If you include the weight of 6 qts of oil for the 4 stroke, the difference is even less.

I can get some measurements for you. I am considering a 140 suzuki for mine but I am adding a very large flotation bracket on the back of the boat. I cant give you any info on the ride because I have never been in one but I am confident I will like it.

I know those numbers are all dry weights and I didn't even consider the extra 10 lbs of oil I was going to throw in the Etec 6 cyls but thought even the 140 was pushing it... But hey, csicknick has a 140 on his Seafari and drags 300 lb bft over the gunwale like "whats the big deal?" so I as I rethink this, a 25" transom goes a long way to maybe allowing more weight.... Nick's still sticking fish, right? Drop us a line Nick, how'd the striper derby go???

I've been on Ebeach's restored Sceptre a couple times and he powered it with a 130hp Yamaha 2S. To me that engine is perfect on the the 20's in general. I don't believe Yamaha makes that engine any longer so you'd have to go used or stumble onto a leftover.
